Portugal: Saluting for Charity, a Fundraiser for 4 Local Charities in the Algarve

Saluting for Charity is a fundraiser for 4 local charities in the Algarve. Please join this practice and help raising much needed funds by Saluting for Charity with 108 rounds of the Sun Salutation – these rounds can be completed in teams or individually. There will also be a silent meditation for those wanting to join in the event. The practice will take place at 9:30am at Breeze, Vale do Lobo Praça in Vale de Lobo, Loulé, Algarve.
The fundraising is set in the spirit of service which is in the heart of Yoga. Luckshmi (Lucy) Cannon, Yoga teacher at Quinta da Calma and Luísa Mckay, founder of Lulushanti Yoga, and under the auspices of of SIS Project – Service in Satchidananda – will be leading this fundraising.
This year’s fundraising will be towards helping 4 charities: C.A.S.A., Canil de San Francisco de Assis, Little Miracles – Onyom (SIS) , The Refúgio dos Burros (The Donkey Sanctuary).
Due to the success of the last 2 years charity events arranged by Lulushanti Yoga, more Yoga teachers are joining together to host another ‘SALUTING FOR CHARITY’ event.

Do join for 108 Yoga Sun Salutations !
Participants – To reach the organisers’ goal, they hope that each participant raises 50 euros. Please raise as much money as possible, this is a chance for us to give back to those in need.
The Event – The target is to do 108 rounds of the Sun Salutation of whatever style you’re familiar with. The 108 rounds can be done individually or as part of a team. Children are welcome to join in and create their own teams.
If you wish to participate in this event, but do not wish to do the Sun Salutation, there will be a guided meditation followed by relaxation.
When? The event will take place on Sunday 27th May 2012, 9:30am – 13.30 a.m.
Where? – Breeze, Vale do Lobo Praca have kindly allowed us to use their pool space overlooking the sea. Breeze will have fresh juices & food available of which a percentage will go to charity.
Additional ways of supporting – There will be boxes for you to donate dried and tinned foods, olive oil, soap, toothpaste, clothes, blankets, animal food, animal beds
Why 108?
- Sun and Earth: The diameter of the sun is 108 times the diameter of the Earth.
- Sanskrit alphabet: There are 54 letters in the Sanskrit alphabet. Each has masculine and feminine, shiva and shakti. 54 times 2 is 108.
- Chinese: The Chinese Buddhists and Taoists use a 108 bead mala
- Planets and Houses: In astrology, there are 12 houses and 9 planets. 12 times 9 equals 108.
- Heart Chakra: The chakras are the intersections of energy lines, and there are said to be a total of 108 energy lines converging to form the heart chakra.
- Stages of the soul: Said that Atman, the human soul or centre goes through 108 stages on the journey.
Theses are only just a few examples for the use of the number 108, the list goes on!
What you need to do to enter
- To start, you will need a sponsor sheet
- Participants require to enter with a minimum of 50 euro sponsorship. Your encouraged to raise as much money as possible, and to donate a little yourself.
- Participants are also encouraged to donate themselves with money donation or food donations
- It is not necessary to complete all 108 salutations. Childs pose and rest is always available
- Children under the age of 16 wishing to participate are welcome to join with parental supervision.
What you need to take
- Sponsor sheets and donations/Water/Towel/Yoga mat/ suncream
- Optional: Any other yoga props which might be useful to assist you through the event
What to wear
- Comfortable clothing. Layers of warm and cool clothes
- We ask that you avoid BLACK…. Please wear VIBRANT colours!
The Charities
C.A.S.A. – Support Centre for the Underprivileged and Homeless
C.A.S.A. is a 100% volunteer, non-profit association inspired and founded by Tulku Péma Wangyal Rinpoché, its Honorary President. The association’s objectives are to provide food, clothing, accommodation and support to the underprivileged and homeless in Portugal providing help to thousands of people. In the Algarve, C.A.S.A. volunteers help poor families at various food distribution centers and soup kitchens, and street teams deliver meals to the elderly and the homeless in Faro, Faro Island, Montenegro, Quarteira and Albufeira.
Canil de San Francisco de Assis
Canil de San Francisco Assis is one of the largest animal shelters in the Almancil/ Loule area. There are around 400 dogs, 100 cats and a few donkeys and horses at the shelter. The Canil is in constant need of donations to continue paying their enormous overheads each month for food, vaccines and sterilization. They solely depend on volunteers and individual donations to stay afloat.
Little Miracles – Onyom – Section of the SIS Project
Onyom is a section of SIS – Service in Satchidananda that is dedicated to helping families and carers of children with Special Needs. The expenses associated with bringing up a child with Special Needs are extremely high – there is additional equipment needed and personal care is often required. Service in Satchidananda (SIS) is a non-profit international collection of charities established in honor of H. H. Sri Swami Satchidananda and based on his core teaching of selfless service. SIS, founded by Nalanie Harilela Chellaram one of Sri Swami Satchidananda’s beloved disciples, exists to serve global projects that are working in a sustainable way and giving back to their local communities.
The Refúgio dos Burros (The Donkey Sanctuary)
The Refúgio dos Burros (The Donkey Sanctuary) in Estombar, Portimão has been rescuing abused and abandoned animals for over 20 years. They have up to 150 animals at any one time. Their aim being to rehabilitate and care for these animals on a small farm, where then, if the animal can’t be found a good home it was promised a home for life on the farm. The Refugio solely depends on donations and volunteers to keep going, there are many costs for feeding, sterilizing and vaccinating the animals each month and are constantly in need of support.
