UK: Tripsichore Yoga Theatre Plays “The Witches” at The Special Yoga Centre in London

| 07-14, 2010

London | Sat, August 14, 2010

Tripsichore Yoga Theatre will be playing “The Witches” at The Special Yoga Centre in London on August 14th.

“The Witches” is about two sinister sisters who use their magic to create a monster to serve them. In a secluded forest retreat, they fashion this creature, but he turns out to be something less and something more than they bargain for. Left to his own devices, he abandons the work he has been set and investigates the storehouse of the witches’ magic. When the sisters discover him perusing their magic stockpile, they each blame the other for allowing this to happen. The reproach escalates into a brawl and it is up to the creature to make peace between them.

Tripsichore are a group of performers who specialise in a dedication to Yoga. Their performances bring the history of Yoga into the world of contemporary theatre. They are dancers, actors and Yoga practitioners, presenting annual seasons of new work in London and around the world.

Tripsichore’s Yoga Theatre celebrates Yoga philosophy and extraordinary physical prowess, giving the 5000 year old discipline of Yoga a sensually modern twist. Yoga Theatre combines the spirituality of Yoga with acrobatic agility and grace and the emotional pull of a good play. Yoga Theatre is like a moving sculpture, driven by the rock tinged, music of such luminaries as B. J. Cole and LagoonWest.

About Tripsichore

Tripsichore began in 1979 as a company devoted to creating full length dance narratives. They explored a variety of stylistic forms including punk ballet, conventional modern dance and strict neo-classical technique. They used masks, performed with rock bands and did pop videos.

While Yoga was always a part of their training, it wasn’t until 1992 that we realised the expressive potential and choreographic viability of Yoga Postures. Once they began to devise works using Yoga Ásanas, their extraordinary artistic logic became evident. Surprisingly, it would seem that there has been no orthodox tradition for using Yoga Technique to create dances in the 5000 year history of the discipline. The postures intrinsically possess a sumptuous beauty and fluidity. They are the ideal vehicle to express the themes of harmony, balance, spirituality, ecstasy, bliss and mysticism because they are exactly about these subjects in and of themselves. Tripsichore are now many years into this experiment and each day brings new discoveries.
