UK: Introduction to “Ashtanga Yoga Mysore Style” by Catherine Haylock

| 08-08, 2010

London | August 21 & 22, 2010

Catherine Haylock, authorised Ashtanga Teacher by Sri K Patthabi Jois, is giving the workshop “Introduction to Ashtanga Yoga Mysore Style” in London on August 21 & 22. This workshop will prepare you for Mysore Style self-practice and is suitable for everybody who’s interested in Ashtanga.

The self-practice classes are an opportunity for Ashtanga practitioners of all levels to deepen their practice within a group environment. Each student works independently at his/her own individual pace and level.

How does Mysore Style work?

You start your practice at a time that suits you. The teacher is there from 6.45am, but make sure you finish your practice by 9am.
The sequences in Ashtanga Yoga are fix and don’t change.
You always start with the sun salutations A&B, followed by the standing sequence and then move into the primary series. In the end you do the finishing sequence. You should know the sequence by heart, but of course you can always ask the teacher or look it up if necessary.

On the workshop on 21 & 22 August you will have the opportunity to learn the sequence.

Primary series

Each posture is build on the previous one. Once you master a posture the teacher will move you on to the next one, until you are able to do the full primary series. After that you will be moved on to Intermediate series, Primary series is already demanding and requests a certain dedication towards the practice. So be patient with your body and let the practice grow on you, and you will experience a happier and better life.

The beauty about the Mysore Style is that each student works independently at his/her own individual pace/breath and level within the group. The teacher is always available and will work with you on your difficulties one to one.

Fridays we always do a primary series led class, counted in Sanskrit. Which will make you keep the flow and energy up and you’ll start to understand the breath in the Asanas and Vinyasas.

Where does Ashtanga Yoga come from?

It is not known how long this system has been passed on verbally but we do know, that hundreds of years ago, Vamana Rishi was first to write down the Asthanga Yoga System on palm leaves so called “Yoga Korunta” manuscript.

The Yoga Korunta has been found by Tirumalai Krishnamacharya, discovered in a library in Calcutta and has been teaching his student Sri K Pattabhi Jois since 1927.

David Williams was one of the first westeners, who has been introduced to the system by Pattabhi Jois. He brought it to the West. But it was in the 90ies, when celebrities like Madonna, Sting, etc. have start practicing Ashtanga Yoga and made it world known.

About Catherine Haylock

Catherine Haylock is an Authorised Asthanga Yoga Teacher and is the founder of “Yoga Creation” school in London.

Catherine grew up in Zurich, Switzerland. From an early age she was searching for inner calm and happiness in spiritual and meditative practices. Being trained as a dancer she gained knowledge of the workings and potential of the body. In 1993 for the first time she learned about yoga – the seed was planted.

A few years later Catherine discovered Ashtanga Yoga taught by Bruno Dietziker, to whom she shall always be grateful, for introducing her to Yoga and particularly to the Ashtanga practice.

Catherine was immediately captivated by the practice, which was both fun and demanding at the same time. A whole new world started to open up. She grew with the practice and Yoga became a way of life. It is an on-going journey of discovery, challenges and happiness, which beautifully mirrors daily life.

Along her journey Catherine worked with many great teachers of various styles of Yoga, which allowed her also to become a teacher.

She always wanted to go to the source of Ashtanga Yoga, to Mysore in India, to study with her guru Sri K Pattabhi Jois and his grandson Sharath. After being one month in his presence Catherine knew she had to stay and learn under that great man. She spent over a year in India.

Sadly Sri K Pattabhi Jois passed on 18 May 2009 at the age of 94. He had taught Ashtanga Yoga for more than 65 years of his life. Catherine feels humbled, to have had the opportunity to study with that legendary figure, he is deeply missed. His grandson Sharath is continuing the legacy and Catherine is grateful to be his student.

Catherine has returned to India every year to continue her studies and she was “Authorised” to teach Ashtanga Yoga by Sri K Pattabhi Jois (KPJAYI, Mysore, India).

After her long stay in India she moved to London and started to teach again in various studios. In 2010 she finally fulfilled her dream to open a beautiful Yoga Studio, to share her knowledge and passion.

She hopes you find it a comfortable and tranquil space in the heart of the London Docklands, where you can come and share her and her colleague’s love of Yoga.
