Europe: Amma, World-famous Humanitarian and Spiritual Leader to Draw More Then 200.000 People, During Europe Visit
Switzerland, Italy, Ireland, France, Germany, Spain & UK | 8 Oct – 17 Nov, 2010
Mata Amritanandamayi (Amma) is embarking on an 11-city Europe tour, starting on October 8th and ending November 17th. Amma is famous for having hugged more then 29 Million people from all nationalities and cultures. It is expected that she will embrace another 200’000 people alone on her Europe tour. In her homeland India, Amma is revered as a Mahatma (great Soul), because she has relieved the suffering of hundreds of thousands and helped children to go to school. She might be the only woman worldwide who has received an honorary doctorate (State University of New York), even though she only went to school for four years.
People from all nationalities and cultures line up for 6 hours to be able to feel Amma’s presence and to get an embrace. Amma’s hug, as well as her own example of a life dedicated to the poor, have inspired hundreds of thousands to work as volunteers for relief projects for those in need and the protection of the environment.
The huge network of the NGO offers free education, free medical care for over 1.2 million patients, job training and micro credits of 80’000 women. The NGO has also built 36’000 houses for the homeless. Amma is Chancellor of the Amrita University (www.amrita.edu) which offers a high profile education combined with the teaching of ethical values. For this achievement Amma received in May 2010 the honorary doctorate of State University of New York (SUNY). Amma was born as a daughter of a poor fisherman and only went to school for four years.
Amma’s programmes in Europe are either two or three days long. They include the embrace, lectures, meditation and concerts. In each city around 20’000 visitors are expected. Amma travels with a crew of 180 volunteers from all over the world. This team is supported by local volunteers who organise the huge event. The entrance to the programme is free, proceeds go to the U.N. accredited NGO “Embracing the World”.
